3rd Sunday After Pentecost / The Holy Hierarch Metropolitan Jonah of Moscow

Beatitudes on 10 Octoechos 6; Hierarch 4, from Ode 3.

1.  We offer Thee the cry of the thief, and we pray: Remember us in Thy kingdom, O Savior.

2.  For the forgiveness of transgressions we offer unto Thee the Cross which Thou didst accept for our sake, O Thou who lovest mankind.

3. We bow down in worship, O Master, before Thy burial and rising, whereby Thou hast delivered the world from corruption, O Thou Who lovest mankind.

4. By Thy death hath death been slain, O Lord, and by Thy resurrection hast Thou saved the world, O Savior.

5. Risen from the tomb, Thou didst meet the myrrh-bearing women; and Thou didst tell Thy disciples to announce Thine arising.

6. Those who slept in darkness, beholding Thee, the Light, in the nethermost parts of hades, O Christ, were raised from the dead.

7. Thou didst ascend to the summit of the virtues, O holy hierarch, and, receiving the sacred anointing of thy superior life, on an exalted cathedra thou didst serve God as a great high priest.

8.  Having acquired thee as a beacon, O all-wise and holy hierarch, the Church of Christ is illumined by thy virtuous instructions, saying: Thou, O Lord, art my strength and confirmation!

9.  Having cut off all carnal desire with divine desire, thou didst shine forth in a perfect life; wherefore, thou hadst passed hence into never-waning effulgence.

10.  O lustrous tongs of the divine Coal, O bush which was not consumed by the Godhead: Burn up the tinder of my passions, and rescue me from everlasting fire.

Troparia

Tone 2:  When Thou didst descend unto death, O Life Immortal, /
then didst Thou slay Hades with the lightning of Thy Divinity. /
And when Thou didst also raise the dead out of the nethermost depths, /
all the Hosts of the heavens cried out: //
O Life-giver, Christ our God, glory be to Thee.

[Troparion of the Temple]

Glory… Tone 4: Having dedicated thyself wholly to the Lord from thy youth, /

thou becamest a model of virtue in prayer, labors and fasting; /

wherefore, beholding thy goodly intent, /

God appointed thee the hierarch and pastor of His Church: /

and for this cause, thy precious body /

hath been preserved whole and incorrupt after thy repose.  //

O holy hierarch Jonah, entreat Christ God, that He save our souls.

Both now… Tone 4: The mystery hidden from before the ages /

and unknown even to the angels, /

through thee, O Theotokos, hath been revealed to those on earth: /

God incarnate in unconfused union, /

Who willingly accepted the Cross for our sake /

and thereby raising up the first-formed man, //

hath saved our souls from death.

Kontakia

Tone 2:  Thou didst rise from the tomb, O omnipotent Savior, /
and Hades was terrified on beholding the wonder; /
and the dead arose, /
and creation at the sight thereof rejoiceth with Thee. /
And Adam also is joyful, //
and the world, O my Savior, praiseth Thee for ever.

[Kontakion of the Temple]

Glory… Tone 8:
From childhood thou didst enslave thyself unto the Lord, O wise one, /
laying waste to thy body through fasting and the keeping of vigils; /
wherefore, thou wast shown to be the pure vessel and abode of the all-holy Spirit.  /
For this cause He ordained thee as hierarch and pastor for His Church; /
and having tended it well, thou didst depart unto the Lord Whom thou didst love.  /
We therefore beseech thee: Be thou mindful of us who honor thy holy memory with faith, //
that we may all cry aloud unto thee: Rejoice, O father Jonah, most honored and holy hierarch!

Both now... Tone 6: O protection of Christians that cannot be put to shame, /

O mediation unto the Creator unfailing, /

disdain not the suppliant voices of sinners, /

but be thou quick, O good one, to help us who in faith cry unto thee; /

hasten to intercession and speed thou to make supplication, //

thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, them that honor thee.
