The Saturday Following the Samaritan Woman

At the beginning of the Liturgy, the Priest sings “Christ is risen” 2 ˝ times, and the Choir finishes

the last half.

Beatitude Verses: Samaritan Woman 4, Ode 9; St. Theodosius 4, from Ode 6, Canon 1:

1. Jesus the life of all was seen hanged willingly on a Tree; and seeing it the earth was shaken, and many bodies of the Saints that slept visibly arose, and Hell’s prison was shaken.

2. Out of the tomb, fair as a bridegroom from his chamber, Thou camest, having abolished the tyranny of death, and smashed the bolts of Hell by Thy divine power, and illumined the world by the spiritual light of Thine arising.

3. Spiritual choirs now let us all establish and let us cry: The Lord hath risen; let the earth rejoice and the heavens be glad, let the clouds rain down showers of justice for us who radiantly celebrate and sing Christ’s praise.

4. Even as he poured out teachings richly, the Lord, source of blessings, life of all living, cried out to the woman, ‘Grant me water to drink, that I may give thee water which drieth up the sources of thy sins’.

5. Through prayers, the keeping of vigils and the chanting of psalms thou didst continually make thy soul a divine garden of paradise, manifestly causing the life-bearing and precious Tree of the Savior and Lord to grow therein.

6. It was thy will to acquire mystic humility, emulating the poverty of the Master, O blessed one; and treading the path of thine own will, at the command of a slothful servant thou didst deign to bear water up to the holy place, where those who met thee recognized thee and paid thee homage.

7. Emulating Him Who washed the feet of His disciples, O divinely wise one, thou didst consent to draw water and bear it upon thy shoulders, and hewing and carrying wood with thine own hands, thou didst show thyself forth as a guide in labors for monks.

8. Through thee, O Theotokos, was slain the most crafty foe who brought destruction upon all creation through corruption, and through thee have the dead been led up to life again; for thou didst truly give birth to the Lord, the Life of all.

Troparia & Kontakia:

Tone 4:

Having learned the joyful proclamation of the Resurrection from the angel, /

and having cast off the ancestral condemnation, /

the women disciples of the Lord spake to the apostles exultantly: /

Death is despoiled and Christ God is risen, //

granting to the world great mercy.

[Troparion of the Temple]

Tone 8: Exalted in virtue, having loved the monastic life from childhood, /

and valiantly attained thy desire, thou didst dwell within a cave; /

and having adorned thy life with asceticism and splendor, /

like one of the incorporeal beings thou didst abide in prayer, /

shining like a radiant beacon in the Russian land. //

O father Theodosius, entreat Christ God, that our souls be saved.

[Kontakion of the Temple]

Glory… Tone 3:

We honor today the blessed Theodosius, /

the star of Russia, who shone forth from the East and arrived in the West; /

for he hath enriched this whole land and all of us /

with miracles and goodness //

by the implementation and grace of the monastic rule.

Both now… Tone 8:

Having come to the well in faith, the Samaritan woman saw Thee, the

Water of Wisdom, /

whereof having drunk abundantly, she, the renowned one, //

inherited the kingdom on high forever.

The Epistle:

Reader: The Prokimenon in the 3rd Tone: Sing praises to our God, sing praises, sing praises to our King, sing praises.

Choir: Sing praises to our God, sing praises, sing praises to our King, sing praises.

Reader: Clap your hands, all ye nations; shout unto God with a voice of rejoicing.

Choir: Sing praises to our God, sing praises, sing praises to our King, sing praises.

Reader: In the 7th Tone: Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.
Choir: Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.

Reader: The Reading is from the Acts of the Holy Apostles:

[Acts 15:35-41 (§37); Heb 13:7-16 (§334)]

Reader: Alleluia in the 4th Tone: Bend Thy bow, and proceed prosperously, and be king, because of truth and meekness and righteousness.

Choir: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

Reader: Thou hast loved righteousness and hated iniquity.

Choir: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

Reader: Thy priests shall be clothed with righteousness, and Thy righteous shall rejoice.

Choir: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

Gospel [John 10:27-38 (§38); Matt. 11:27-30 (§43)]

Instead of “It is truly meet…” we chant the Irmos of the 9th Ode of the

Canon of the feast, first Tone:

Refrain: The angel cried unto her that is full of grace: Rejoice, O pure Virgin!

And again I say, rejoice! For thy Son is risen from the grave on the third day, and hath

raised the dead, O ye people, be joyful!

Irmos: Shine, shine, O new Jerusalem, for the glory of the Lord is risen upon

thee; dance now and be glad, O Zion, and do thou exult, O pure Theotokos, in the arising

of Him Whom thou didst bear.

Communion Verse: Receive ye the Body of Christ, taste ye of the fountain of immortality. In everlasting remembrance shall the righteous be; he shall not be afraid of evil tidings. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

We sing “Christ is risen…” instead of “We have seen the true light…“

At the dismissal, when the priest says: “Glory to Thee, O Christ God…” The Choir sings

“Christ is risen…” x3 instead of “Glory… Both now… Father bless!” Then the priest

gives the dismissal.
