17th Sunday After Pentecost / The Apodosis of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

Beatitudes on 10: Octoechos: 6; Feast: 4, from Ode 9, 1st Canon..

1.  Remember us, O Christ, Thou Savior of the world, as Thou didst remember the thief upon the Cross; and account us all worthy of Thy heavenly kingdom, O Thou Who alone art compassionate.

2.  Hearken, O Adam, and rejoice with Eve; for he who of old stripped you both naked, and by deception hath taken all of us captive, hath been set at nought by the Cross of Christ.

3.  Nailed of Thine own will to the Tree, O our Savior, Thou didst deliver Adam from the curse which came through the tree, and hast rewarded that which is in Thine image with a dwelling in paradise, in that Thou art compassionate.

4.  Today is Christ risen from the tomb, granting incorruption unto all the faithful; and He reneweth the joy of the myrrh-bearing women after His suffering and resurrection.

5.  Rejoice, O wise myrrh-bearing women, who were first to behold the resurrection of Christ, and who proclaimed to the apostles the glad tidings of the restoration of the whole world!

6.  O ye apostles, who are manifestly the friends of Christ and are to be enthroned with Him in glory: entreat Him with boldness, that He intercede for us, for ye are His disciples.

7 & 8.  O Theotokos, thou art a mystical Paradise, who untilled hast brought forth Christ. He hath planted upon the earth the life-giving Tree of the Cross: therefore at its exaltation on this day, we worship Him and thee do we magnify.

9.  Let all the trees of the forests rejoice, for their nature hath been sanctified by Him who planted them in the beginning—Christ Who was stretched out upon the Tree.  Wherefore, worshipping it as it is now raised aloft, we magnify thee, O Theotokos.

10.  A sacred horn hath been lifted up, the chief horn for all the divinely wise: the Cross, whereby all the horns of the sinful are noetically broken asunder.  Wherefore, worshipping it as it is now raised aloft, we magnify thee, O Theotokos.

Kontakia

Tone 8:  Having risen from the tomb, Thou didst raise up the dead and didst resurrect Adam. /

Eve also danceth at Thy Resurrection, //

and the ends of the world celebrate Thine arising from the dead, O Greatly-merciful one.

Glory… Both now… Tone 4:

O Thou Who wast lifted up willingly on the Cross, /

bestow Thy mercies upon the new community named after Thee, O Christ God; /

gladden with Thy power the Orthodox Christians, /

granting them victory over enemies; //

may they have as Thy help the weapon of peace, the invincible trophy.

Instead of “It is truly meet…” we chant the Irmos of the 9th Ode of the First Canon of

the feast, Eighth Tone:

Refrain:  Magnify, O my soul, / the most precious Cross of the Lord.

Irmos:   O Theotokos, thou art a mystical Paradise, /

who untilled hast brought forth Christ. /

He hath planted upon the earth the life-giving Tree of the Cross: /

therefore at its exaltation on this day, //

we worship Him and thee do we magnify.
