The Sunday of the Paralytic / The translation of the relics of St. Nicholas

At the beginning of the typika, the Choir sings “Christ is risen” 3 times.

Beatitude Verses: 4 of the Resurrection,  Ode 3 from the Pentecostarion 4; Ode 6 Hierarch 4:

1. From paradise didst Thou drive our forefather Adam, who had broken Thy
commandment, O Christ; but, O Compassionate One, Thou didst cause to dwell therein
the thief who confessed Thee on the cross, crying out: “Remember me, O Savior, in Thy
kingdom!”

2. In rising from the dead, Thou hast raised us up from the passions with Thyself through
Thy resurrection, O Lord; and all the power of death hast Thou destroyed, O Savior.
Wherefore, with faith we cry out to Thee: “Remember us also in Thy kingdom!”

3. O Thou who as God grantest life, by Thy three days in the tomb Thou didst raise up
with Thyself the dead in hell, and as One Who is good Thou hast poured forth
incorruption upon all of us who with faith ever cry out: “Remember us also in Thy
kingdom!”

4. With the curse of death didst Thou condemn us who had sinned, O Lord, Bestower of
life; yet having suffered in Thy flesh, O sinless Master, Thou hast granted life unto
mortals who cry out: “Remember us also in Thy kingdom!”

5.  When of old the sun beheld Thee hanging upon the Tree, O Word, the light withdrew
and all the earth was troubled; the dead arose when Thou becamest one dead, O
Almighty One.

6.  When Thou didst go into the womb of the earth with Thy soul, Hades gave forth with
haste the souls which it possessed, which cried unto Thy might a song of thanksgiving, O
only Lord.

7.  Do Thou, O supremely good One, heal my soul, which hath been ailing grievously for
many years, even as Thou didst heal the paralytic aforetime, that I may walk in Thy ways,
which Thou didst show unto them that long for Thee.

8.  Together with the Hosts on high, O Archangel of God, make supplication for us who
praise thee with faith, preserving and protecting us from falling into the passions of life.

9.  Health of body and cleansing of soul do we receive abundantly from thy divine Church

as from a pool, O holy hierarch Nicholas; for through grace wonders pour forth upon

them that trust in thee with faith unfeigned.

10.  As thou art the most glorious favorite of Christ, O father, deliver thy servants, who

honor the translation of thy holy relics, from all manner of danger, from grievous

misfortunes and the sorrows that beset us.

11.  Save us by thy guidance, O Nicholas, preacher and teacher of the nations, who has

led to salvation the people of God Who appeared in the flesh for the benefit of many.

12.  Thou art the portal of the King of the heavens and the temple of His glory, O all-

hymned Virgin.  Open thou the gates of mercy, and lead us into the abode of heavenly

glory by thy supplications.

Troparia

Tone 3:  Let the heavens be glad; let earthly things rejoice; * for the Lord hath wrought
might with His arm. * He hath trampled down death by death; * the first-born of the dead
hath He become. *  From the belly of Hades hath He delivered us * and Hath granted to
the world great mercy.

Glory… Tone 4:  The day of splendid solemnity is come; the city of Bari rejoiceth, and
with it the whole world doth exult with hymns and spiritual songs.  For today is the
sacred feast of the translation of the precious and much-healing relics of the hierarch
Nicholas the wonder-worker.  For like the never-setting Sun, he shineth with brilliant
beams of light, driving away the darkness of temptations and misfortunes from them that
cry out with faith: Save us, O Nicholas, for thou art our intercessor!

Both now… Tone 4: The mystery hidden from before the ages and unknown even to the
angels, through thee, O Theotokos, hath been revealed to those on earth: God incarnate in
unconfused union, Who willingly accepted the Cross for our sake and thereby raising up
the first-formed man, hath saved our souls from death.

Gospel [John 5:1-15; Luke 6:17-23]

Kontakia

Tone 3:  Thy relics have moved like a star, from the East unto the West, O holy hierarch

Nicholas; and the sea hath been sanctified by thy passage.  The city of Bari receiveth

grace through thee, for thou hast been shown forth for us as a wonder-worker: illustrious,

most wondrous and merciful.

Glory… Both now… Tone 3:  As of old Thou didst raise the paralytic, O Lord, by Thy

Divine presence, raise my soul which is paralyzed grievously by all manner of sins and

unseemly deeds, that being saved I may cry out: O compassionate Christ, glory be to Thy

power.

Instead of “It is truly meet…” we chant the Irmos of the 9th Ode of the

Canon of the feast, first Tone:

Refrain:  The angel cried unto her that is full of grace: Rejoice, O pure Virgin!

And again I say, rejoice!  For thy Son is risen from the grave on the third day, and hath

raised the dead, O ye people, be joyful!

Irmos:   Shine, shine, O new Jerusalem, for the glory of the Lord is risen upon

thee; dance now and be glad, O Zion, and do thou exult, O pure Theotokos, in the arising

of Him Whom thou didst bear.
