Mid-Pentecost / Great Martyr George

At the beginning of the Liturgy, the Priest sings “Christ is risen” 2 ˝ times, and the Choir finishes

the last half.

Beatitudes on 8, First Canon of the Feast: 4, from Ode 3; Second Canon of the Feast 4, from Ode 6:

1.  Thou didst open unto the Church the springs of life-creating waters, O Good One,
and didst cry: If any zealous man thirst, let him go and drink.

2.  Thou saidst plainly that Thou wouldst be lifted up from earth unto Heaven, and Thou
didst promise to send the Holy Spirit from thence.

3.  Do not judge a judgment according to appearance, O ye Jews; thus said  the Master when
He came unto the temple and taught at the Judaic Mid-feast, as it is written.

4.  Do not judge a judgment according to appearance, O ye Jews, for Christ is come. Thy
Prophets named Him: He that cometh from Zion and restoreth the world.

5.  Transcending nature, recounting and understanding are the brave deeds of thy valor,
which are unceasingly hymned, O all-blessed martyr George.

6.  In that thou art a conversor with the army of heaven, and beholdest the revelation of
God insofar as thou canst attain thereto, O blessed one, save those who honor thee with
faith.

7.  Inclining toward God in every way, and receiving the effulgence of miracles, O all-
blessed George, thou dost distribute gifts to those in need.

8.  I flee now to thee, O all-pure one. Save and preserve me by the supplications; for
thou canst do all things soever thou desirest, in that thou art the Mother of the Almighty.

Troparion:

Tone 8:

In the midst of the feast, give Thou my thirsty soul to drink of the waters of piety; /

for Thou, O Savior, didst cry out to all: /

Whosoever is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.  //

Wherefore, O Well-spring of life, Christ our God, glory be to Thee.

Glory… Tone 4:  As a liberator of captives, /

a helper of the poor, and a physician of the infirm, /

O champion of kings, /

victorious great martyr George, entreat Christ God, //

that our souls be saved.

Both now… Tone 8:

In the midst of the feast, give Thou my thirsty soul to drink of the waters of piety; /

for Thou, O Savior, didst cry out to all: /

Whosoever is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.  //

Wherefore, O Well-spring of life, Christ our God, glory be to Thee.

Kontakion:

Glory…Tone 4:  Having been cultivated by God, /

thou didst show thyself to be a most honorable husbandman of piety, /

gathering to thyself the sheaves of the virtues; /

for, having sown in tears, thou reapest in gladness, /

and having suffered in the shedding of thy blood, /

thou hast received Christ. And by thy supplications, O holy one, //

thou grantest forgiveness of transgressions unto all.

Both now…Tone 4:  In the midst of the Judaic feast, /

Thou didst say to those present, O Christ God, Master and Creator of all: /

Come ye, and receive the water of immortality.  /

Wherefore, we fall down before Thee, /

crying out in faith and saying: /

Grant us Thy mercy and compassion; //

for Thou art the Well-spring of our life.

Instead of “It is truly meet…” we chant the Irmos of the 9th Ode of the

Second Canon of the feast, Tone 8:

Virginity is alien to mothers, /

and childbirth is foreign to virgins,

but in thee, O Theotokos, both were granted.  //

Wherefore, all we the tribes of the earth bless thee unceasingly.
