Sunday of the Publican and Pharisee / Afterfeast of Theophany / Tone 8
Beatitudes on 12: Octoechos 4; Feast 4, from Ode 6; Triodion 4, from Ode 6.

1.  Remember us, O Christ, Thou Savior of the world, as Thou didst remember the thief

upon the Cross; and account us all worthy of Thy heavenly kingdom, O Thou Who alone

art compassionate.

2.  Hearken, O Adam, and rejoice with Eve; for he who of old stripped you both naked,

and by deception hath taken all of us captive, hath been set at nought by the Cross of

Christ.

3.  Nailed of Thine own will to the Tree, O our Savior, Thou didst deliver Adam from the

curse which came through the tree, and hast rewarded that which is in Thine image with a

dwelling in paradise, in that Thou art compassionate.

4.  Today is Christ risen from the tomb, granting incorruption unto all the faithful; and He

reneweth the joy of the myrrh-bearing women after His suffering and resurrection.

5 & 6.  The Father in a voice full of joy made manifest His Beloved Whom He had

begotten from the womb.  ‘Verily,’ said He, ‘this is My offspring, of the same nature as

Myself: bearing light, He hath come forth from mankind, My living Word, in the divine

providence made a mortal man.’

7.  The prophet, mysteriously swallowed up for the space of three nights in the belly of the sea monster, emerged again, making manifest beforehand to all our regeneration in the last times, and our deliverance from the dragon that slayeth mankind.

8.  When the shining vaults of heaven were opened, he who knew the Scriptures beheld the Spirit, Who proceedeth from the Father and abideth in the all-pure Word, descending in ineffable manner in the form of a dove; and he commanded the multitudes to hasten to the Master.

9.  The Publican and the Pharisee ran the race of life together, but the one was overcome
by foolish pride and brought to shameful shipwreck, while the other was saved by
humility.

10.  Changing to a righteous course of life, let us emulate the wisdom of the Publican and
flee from the hateful conceit of the Pharisee; and so let us attain to life.

11.  Let us eagerly follow the ways of Jesus the Savior and His humility, if we desire to
attain the everlasting tabernacle of joy and to dwell in the land of the living.

12.  I was created naked in innocence and simplicity; then the enemy clothed me in the

raiment of transgression and the grossness of the flesh.  But now through thy mediation,

O Maiden, I am saved.

Troparia & Kontakia

Tone 8:  From on high didst Thou descend, O compassionate One; /

to burial of three days hast Thou submitted /

that Thou mightest free us from our passions. //

O our Life and Resurrection, O Lord, glory be to Thee.

Tone 1:  When Thou, wast baptized in the Jordan, O Lord, /

the worship of the Trinity was made manifest; /

for the voice of the Father bare witness to Thee,  /

calling Thee His beloved Son. /

And the Spirit in the form of a dove /

confirmed the certainty of the word. /

O Christ our God, Who hast appeared //

and hast enlightened the world, glory be to Thee.

Glory… Tone 4:  Thou hast appeared today unto the whole world, /
and Thy light, O Lord, hath been signed upon us /
who with knowledge chant unto Thee: /
Thou hast come, Thou hast appeared, //
O Light Unapproachable.

Both now... Tone 3.
Unto the Lord let us sinners offer groanings like those of the Publican /
and let us fall down before Him, as He is Master.  /
For He desireth the salvation of all men; /
He granteth forgiveness unto all that repent.  /
For our sake He became incarnate, //
He who with the Father is co-unoriginate God.

Gospel [Matthew 4:12-17 (§8) and Luke 18:10-14 (§89)]

Instead of “It is truly meet…” we chant the Irmos of the 9th Ode of the First Canon of

the feast, Second Tone:

Refrain:  Magnify, O my soul, her who is more honorable than the host on high,

the most pure Virgin Theotokos.

Irmos:   Every tongue is at a loss to praise thee as is due: * even a spirit from the

world above is filled with dizziness, when it seeketh to sing thy praises, O Theotokos. *

But since thou art good, accept our faith: * Thou knowest well our love inspired by God,

* for thou art the Protector of Christians and we magnify thee.

Communion Verse:  Praise the Lord in the heavens, praise Him in the highest!  The

grace of God that bringeth salvation unto all men hath appeared.  Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!
