17th Sunday after Pentecost / St. Eumenius, Bishop of Gortyna / Afterfeast of the Exaltation

Beatitudes on 10: Octoechos: 6; Feast: 4, from Ode 6.

1. Remember us, O Christ, Thou Savior of the world, as Thou didst remember the thief upon the Cross; and account us all worthy of Thy heavenly kingdom, O Thou Who alone art compassionate.

2. Hearken, O Adam, and rejoice with Eve; for he who of old stripped you both naked, and by deception hath taken all of us captive, hath been set at nought by the Cross of Christ.

3. Nailed of Thine own will to the Tree, O our Savior, Thou didst deliver Adam from the curse which came through the tree, and hast rewarded that which is in Thine image with a dwelling in paradise, in that Thou art compassionate.

4. Today is Christ risen from the tomb, granting incorruption unto all the faithful; and He reneweth the joy of the myrrh-bearing women after His suffering and resurrection.

5. Rejoice, O wise myrrh-bearing women, who were first to behold the resurrection of Christ, and who proclaimed to the apostles the glad tidings of the restoration of the whole world!

6. O ye apostles, who are manifestly the friends of Christ and are to be enthroned with Him in glory: entreat Him with boldness, that He intercede for us, for ye are His disciples.

7 &8. Jonah stretched out his hands in the form of a cross within the belly of the sea monster, plainly prefiguring the redeeming Passion. Cast out from thence after three days, he foreshadowed the marvelous Resurrection of Christ our God, who was crucified in the flesh and enlightened the world by His Rising on the third day.

9. Bent with age and weighed down with infirmity, Jacob drew himself up when he

crossed his arms, showing forth the power of the life-bearing Cross; for God Who was

nailed in the flesh hath set aright the obsolescence of the law of the Scripture which was

written in shadows, and hath dispelled the soul-destroying disease of deception.

10. Divine Israel, laying his hands cross-wise upon the heads of the young, revealed that the people who hath the honor of being the elder is a slave to the law. Wherefore, when suspected of erring in so doing, he did not alter the life-bearing image, for, he said, protected by the Cross, the newly established people of Christ God surpass them.

Troparia & Kontakia

Tone 8: From on high didst Thou descend, O compassionate One; /

to burial of three days hast Thou submitted /

that Thou mightest free us from our passions. //

O our Life and Resurrection, O Lord, glory be to Thee.

Tone 1: O Lord, save Thy people /

and bless Thine inheritance. /

Grant Thou victory unto Orthodox Christians /

over their enemies, /

and by the power of Thy Cross //

do Thou preserve Thy commonwealth.

[Troparion of the Temple]

Tone 8: Having risen from the tomb, Thou didst raise up the dead and didst resurrect Adam. /

Eve also danceth at Thy Resurrection, //

and the ends of the world celebrate Thine arising from the dead, O Greatly-merciful one.

[Kontakion of the Temple]

Glory… Tone 2: Illumined with divine light, /

thou dost enlighten us who hymn /

thine honored, glorious and holy repose with love, /

O most blessed and holy hierarch, father Eumenius, //

unceasingly praying for us all.

Both now... Tone 4:

O Thou Who wast lifted up willingly on the Cross, /

bestow Thy mercies upon the new community named after Thee, O Christ God; /

gladden with Thy power the Orthodox Christians, /

granting them victory over enemies; //

may they have as Thy help the weapon of peace, the invincible trophy.

Refrain: Magnify, O my soul, the most precious Cross of the Lord.

Irmos: O Theotokos, thou art a mystical Paradise, /

who untilled hast brought forth Christ. /

He hath planted upon the earth the life-giving Tree of the Cross: /

therefore at its exaltation on this day, //

we worship Him and thee do we magnify.

Communion Verse: Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise Him in the highest! The Light of Thy countenance, O Lord, hath been signed upon us. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!
