17th Sunday After Pentecost / Afterfeast of the Nativity of the Theotokos / Holy Virgins Menodora, Metrodora and Nymphodora.

Beatitudes on 10: Octoechos: 6; Feast: 4, from Ode 4.

1.  Remember us, O Christ, Thou Savior of the world, as Thou didst remember the thief

upon the Cross; and account us all worthy of Thy heavenly kingdom, O Thou Who alone

art compassionate.

2.  Hearken, O Adam, and rejoice with Eve; for he who of old stripped you both naked,

and by deception hath taken all of us captive, hath been set at nought by the Cross of

Christ.

3.  Nailed of Thine own will to the Tree, O our Savior, Thou didst deliver Adam from the

curse which came through the tree, and hast rewarded that which is in Thine image with a

dwelling in paradise, in that Thou art compassionate.

4.  Today is Christ risen from the tomb, granting incorruption unto all the faithful; and He

reneweth the joy of the myrrh-bearing women after His suffering and resurrection.

5.  Rejoice, O wise myrrh-bearing women, who were first to behold the resurrection of

Christ, and who proclaimed to the apostles the glad tidings of the restoration of the whole

world!

6.  O ye apostles, who are manifestly the friends of Christ and are to be enthroned with

Him in glory: entreat Him with boldness, that He intercede for us, for ye are His disciples.

7.   We hymn Thee, O Lord, Who hast given unto all, as a haven of salvation, her who

gaveth birth to Thee.

8. Christ hath revealed thee, O Bride of God, to all who with faith hymn thy mystery as

their boast and might.

9. The Patriarch Jacob, clearly foreseeing the mighty works of Thy dispensation, O

Savior, cried out in the Spirit, saying mystically to Judah:  “From the tender plant thou art

gone up, O my Son!”, referring to Thee, O God, Who wast born of the Virgin.

10. The all-unoriginate Origin receiveth a beginning from thee in the flesh and in time, O

Theotokos, and He remaineth equally the unoriginate and incarnate Word of the Father,

equally everlasting with the Spirit, maintaining His divine dignity.

Troparia & Kontakia

Tone 8:  From on high didst Thou descend, O compassionate One; /

to burial of three days hast Thou submitted /

that Thou mightest free us from our passions. //

O our Life and Resurrection, O Lord, glory be to Thee.

Tone 4: Thy nativity, O Theotokos Virgin, /

hath proclaimed joy to all the world; /

for from thee hath dawned the Sun of Righteousness, Christ our God, /

annulling the curse, and bestowing the blessing, //

abolishing death and granting us life eternal.

[Troparion of the Temple]

Tone 8:  Having risen from the tomb, Thou didst raise up the dead and didst resurrect Adam. /

Eve also danceth at Thy Resurrection, //

and the ends of the world celebrate Thine arising from the dead, O Greatly-merciful one.

[Kontakion of the Temple]

Glory… Tone 4: Clad as sisters in the Spirit, /

ye who contended with endurance for the Trinity /

have vanquished the greatly cunning enemy; /

wherefore, ye have made your abode /

with the five virgins in the heavenly bridal chamber, /

O passion-bearers, //

and with the angels ye stand in unceasing gladness before the King of all.

Tone 4:  Joachim and Anna were freed from the reproach of childlessness /

and Adam and Eve from the corruption of death, by thy holy nativity, O immaculate one, /

which thy people, redeemed from the guilt of offenses, /

celebrate, by crying to thee: //

The barren woman giveth birth to the Theotokos, the nourisher of our life.

Gospel [John 3:13-17 (§9)]

Instead of “It is truly meet…” we chant the Irmos of the 9th Ode of the Second Canon

of the feast, Eighth Tone:

Refrain:  Magnify, O my soul, / the most glorious nativity of the Mother of God.

Irmos:   Foreign to mothers is virginity, /

and strange is childbirth for virgins, /

yet both were accomplished in thee, O Theotokos. /

Wherefore, we and all generations of the earth //

without ceasing do magnify thee.

Communion Verse:  Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise Him in the highest!  I will

take the cup of salvation, and I will call upon the name of the Lord.  Alleluia, Alleluia,

Alleluia!
