The Sunday of the Paralytic / Great-Martyr George

At the beginning of the Liturgy, the Priest sings “Christ is risen” 2 ˝ times, and the Choir finishes

the last half.

Beatitudes on 12, Tone 3, from the Pentecostarion: 4; Paralytic 4, from Ode 3; Great Martyr 4, from Ode 6.
1. From paradise didst Thou drive our forefather Adam, who had broken Thy
commandment, O Christ; but, O Compassionate One, Thou didst cause to dwell therein
the thief who confessed Thee on the cross, crying out: “Remember me, O Savior, in Thy
kingdom!”

2. In rising from the dead, Thou hast raised us up from the passions with Thyself through
Thy resurrection, O Lord; and all the power of death hast Thou destroyed, O Savior.
Wherefore, with faith we cry out to Thee: “Remember us also in Thy kingdom!”

3. O Thou who as God grantest life, by Thy three days in the tomb Thou didst raise up
with Thyself the dead in hell, and as One Who is good Thou hast poured forth
incorruption upon all of us who with faith ever cry out: “Remember us also in Thy
kingdom!”

4. With the curse of death didst Thou condemn us who had sinned, O Lord, Bestower of
life; yet having suffered in Thy flesh, O sinless Master, Thou hast granted life unto
mortals who cry out: “Remember us also in Thy kingdom!”

5.  When of old the sun beheld Thee hanging upon the Tree, O Word, the light withdrew
and all the earth was troubled; the dead arose when Thou becamest one dead, O
Almighty One.

6.  When Thou didst go into the womb of the earth with Thy soul, Hades gave forth with
haste the souls which it possessed, which cried unto Thy might a song of thanksgiving, O
only Lord.

7.  Do Thou, O supremely good One, heal my soul, which hath been ailing grievously for
many years, even as Thou didst heal the paralytic aforetime, that I may walk in Thy ways,
which Thou didst show unto them that long for Thee.

8.  Together with the Hosts on high, O Archangel of God, make supplication for us who
praise thee with faith, preserving and protecting us from falling into the passions of life.

9.  Transcending nature, recounting and understanding are the brave deeds of thy valor,

which are unceasingly hymned, O all-blessed martyr George.

10.  In that thou art a conversor with the army of heaven, and beholdest the revelation of

God insofar as thou canst attain thereto, O blessed one, save those who honor thee with

faith.

11.  Inclining toward God in every way, and receiving the effulgence of miracles, O all-

blessed George, thou dost distribute gifts to those in need.

12.  I flee now to thee, O all-pure one. Save and preserve me by the supplications; for

thou canst do all things soever thou desirest, in that thou art the Mother of the Almighty.

Troparia & Kontakia

Tone 3:  Let the heavens be glad; let earthly things rejoice; /

for the Lord hath wrought might with His arm. /

He hath trampled down death by death; /

the first-born of the dead hath He become. /

From the belly of Hades hath He delivered us //

and Hath granted to the world great mercy.

Tone 4:  As a liberator of captives, /

a helper of the poor, and a physician of the infirm, /

O champion of kings, /

victorious great martyr George, entreat Christ God, //

that our souls be saved.

Glory… Tone 4:  Having been cultivated by God, /

thou didst show thyself to be a most honorable husbandman of piety, /

gathering to thyself the sheaves of the virtues; /

for, having sown in tears, thou reapest in gladness, /

and having suffered in the shedding of thy blood, /

thou hast received Christ. And by thy supplications, O holy one, //

thou grantest forgiveness of transgressions unto all.

Both now… Tone 3:  As of old Thou didst raise the paralytic, O Lord, /

by Thy Divine presence, /

raise my soul which is paralyzed grievously /

by all manner of sins and unseemly deeds, /

that being saved I may cry out: //

O compassionate Christ, glory be to Thy power.

Him.

Gospel [John 5:1-15 (§14); John 15:17-16:2 (§52)]

Instead of “It is truly meet…” we chant the Irmos of the 9th Ode of the

Canon of the feast, first Tone:

Refrain:  The angel cried unto her that is full of grace: Rejoice, O pure Virgin!

And again I say, rejoice!  For thy Son is risen from the grave on the third day, and hath

raised the dead, O ye people, be joyful!

Irmos:   Shine, shine, O new Jerusalem, for the glory of the Lord is risen upon

thee; dance now and be glad, O Zion, and do thou exult, O pure Theotokos, in the arising

of Him Whom thou didst bear.

Communion Verse:  Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise Him in the highest.  In

everlasting remembrance shall the righteous be; he shall not be afraid of evil tidings.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

We sing “Christ is risen…” instead of “We have seen the true light…“

At the dismissal, when the priest says: “Glory to Thee, O Christ God…” The Choir sings

“Christ is risen…” x3 instead of “Glory… Both now… Father bless!”  Then the priest

gives the dismissal.
